President Muhammadu Buhari has slammed an immediate nationwide curfew as part of new, vigorous measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The curfew begins at 8pm and ends at 6pm.  It was part of the measures he announced in a simulcast on Monday night.

Buhari, who said his decision was based on consultations with the Presidential Task Force and the Governors Forum, did not state when the curfew will begin.

It is however expected to take effect from Tuesday.

Other measures announced are:

*Mandatory use of face masks or coverings in public.

*Maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene.

*Restrictions on social and religious gatherings shall remain in place.

He urged state governments, corporate organisations and philanthropists to support the production of cloth masks for citizens.
